Leggy Luke and the Mystery of the Deep
With rabbit ears and a big nose, Leggy Luke is a strange being who lands on a mysterious island to explore the belly of a volcano. An enchanting 3D silent adventure.
A rope flushes the surface of the water. On his dinghy, Leggy Luke grabs hold of it to see where it leads him. He lands on an island. Exploring the limestone chasms, tumbling down the crystal walls, he confronts bats and lightning, impressed and fascinated by so many marvels. A breathtaking epic that will delight all generations!
Picard offers us a new splendid 3D adventure - this time photographing the sublime landscapes hidden beneath our feet. Leggy Luke's candour contrasts with the sumptuous sets designed by an illustrator who is as much an illusionist as a mad filmmaker. Juggling focal lengths and microscopes, building and moulding with plaster, he has magnified in his staging the material he gleaned here and there on his walks, like a child who never ceases to regard pebbles and gravel as treasures.
"For me, a book is always a bit like an island waiting to be explored." - Matthieu Picard
IN THE MEDIA
"Anaglyphs are stereoscopic images that give the illusion of 3D, and became very popular at the end of the 19th century with the rise of photography. Matthias Picard uses it with amusement and aestheticism, [...] inviting for daydreaming. " - Le Monde, monthly children's books picks (October 2024)
"We're putting on our 3D glasses to talk about a psychedelic album: ‘Leggy Luke and the Mystery of the Deep’ by Matthias Picard. Using 3D combined with macroscopic photography, black and white, plaster dioramas and organic matter. Splendour! [...] It's a sensory adventure full of twists and turns. [...]We're seduced by the humour, a kind of tender smile that stems from the character's name, his good looks and his friendliness [...] The adventure here is also in the way the story engages our senses. We find ourselves completely fascinated by the materials we come across during our exploration." - France Culture
"French illustrator Picard drafts intricate, densely hatched, scratchbook-style b&w illustrations that teem with undersea flora and fauna, all of which are a delight to pore over." - Publishers Weekly, about Jim Curious
THE AUTHOR
Matthias Picard graduated from the Arts Décos in Strasbourg in 2007. After taking part in all the fanzines that led to the creation of Éditions 2024, he published his first book, Jeanine, with L'Association. With Jim Curious, Voyage to the Heart of the Sea, he reinvented 3D storytelling using anaglyphs. This success, adapted into an exhibition and translated around the world, launched the publishing house 2024 and its author. From then on, he has ploughed his own particular furrow, made up of mystical road trips, psychedelia for children and all-out graphic research.
